The 2026 market

SEAI wall insulation grants are at record levels in 2026, and most eligible homes have not yet claimed

Wall insulation grants in Ireland reached their highest levels in 2026, with external wall insulation now attracting up to €8,000, cavity wall up to €1,700 and dry-lining up to €4,500 under the Better Energy Homes scheme. No income threshold applies, so if your home was built before 2011 you are likely eligible regardless of household income.

Despite record grant levels, the majority of eligible homes in Ireland have not yet been upgraded. Rising energy costs and growing awareness of the grants are driving a significant increase in homeowners actively searching for registered contractors. Those who act now are doing so while grant levels are at their peak and contractor waiting times are still manageable.

"We had external wall insulation fitted last winter and the difference is night and day. The contractor sorted the entire SEAI grant, €8,000 straight off the price, and the house holds its heat now in a way it never did before."

Common questions about SEAI wall insulation grants

Most homes built and occupied before 2011 qualify for SEAI wall insulation grants. Your property must be your main residence or a rental you own, and the work must be carried out by a registered contractor. Eligibility is based on the age and type of your home, with no income test.

Cavity wall, external wall and internal dry-lining insulation all qualify under the Better Energy Homes scheme. The walls must meet the technical standards set by the SEAI once the work is complete. A BER assessment is required after the works to release the grant.

Cavity wall insulation is usually completed in a single day. External and internal insulation are larger projects and typically take one to three weeks depending on the size of your home. Grant approval from the SEAI is normally confirmed within a few weeks of applying.

Yes. You can claim wall insulation alongside other SEAI grants such as attic insulation, heat pumps and solar panels. Heat pump installation must be carried out by a RECI-registered electrician; electriciansinireland.ie lists approved installers. Combining measures often improves your home's energy rating faster and can unlock a bonus grant. You can also upgrade in stages rather than applying all at once.

It is the Government grant scheme run by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland to help homeowners make their homes warmer and more energy efficient. It offers fixed grant amounts towards approved upgrades including wall insulation. The scheme is open to homes built before 2011.

Yes. To claim an SEAI grant the work must be carried out by a contractor registered with the scheme. Using an approved installer guarantees the work meets the required technical standards and that your grant will be paid. Every contractor in this directory is SEAI-registered.
